As part of the preparation for a trip to the Big Island of Hawaii, I designed this quilt as project that I could work on while traveling. Inspired by traditional Hawaiian quilts, I wanted to create a modern variation using traditional Hawaiian design and production techniques.
The background curves were machine pieced. The 16 blossoms were folded, cut and basted using traditional Hawaiian quilt methods. I needle-turn appliqued the blossoms while traveling. When I returned home, I machine-pieced the blocks to complete the quilt top. The quilting was achieved on a domestic machine with a walking foot (with lots of buried threads).
